Cookie Policy

What cookies are

A cookie is a small text file that a site asks your browser to store, so that the next page you open can recognise settings you have already chosen. This page also covers local storage, which works in a similar way and is what we use to remember your answer to the cookie notice.

Categories we use

Cookies on gemrecap.com fall into three groups. Only the first is set before you make a choice.

  • Essential — keep the site working: they remember your response to the cookie notice, hold basic security and load-balancing state, and are needed for the subscription form to submit. Typical lifetime: from the end of the session up to twelve months. These cannot be turned off from within the site.
  • Analytics — count visits and show which recaps are read and how far down the page people get, in aggregate. Typical lifetime: up to twenty-six months. Set only after you accept.
  • Advertising and marketing — set by the advertising networks whose promotions appear here, to select promotions, limit how often the same one is shown, and measure whether a click led anywhere. Typical lifetime: up to thirteen months. Set only after you accept.

We do not use cookies to build profiles of individuals for our own purposes, and we do not sell the data they generate.

Push notifications and local storage

If you subscribe to catalogue updates, your browser issues an anonymous push subscription identifier which is stored by OneSignal, our push provider, along with tags recording the site and the source of the subscription. That identifier is not a cookie, but it works alongside them and is only created after you accept the browser prompt.

Local storage is also used to remember that you have already answered the cookie notice, so it is not shown on every page you open.

A Plus membership is not recorded in a cookie on your device. Its status is held against your e-mail address by our mailing provider and, for payment, by the external payment provider — so clearing cookies here has no effect on a membership.

Your choice, and how to change it

The banner at the bottom of the page lets you accept or decline the non-essential categories. Your answer is stored in your browser; clear your browsing data for this site and the banner will appear again on your next visit so you can choose differently.

Every major browser also lets you block or delete cookies for a specific site from its settings, usually under Privacy or Site settings. Blocking essential cookies may stop parts of the site from behaving as intended.

Browser notifications are controlled separately, in the site permissions panel of your browser, where you can revoke the permission at any time.

How this relates to our other policies

What we do with the information cookies generate — including who receives it and how long we keep it — is described in the Privacy Policy. The advertising disclosure that explains why promotional cookies appear here at all is in the Terms of Use.
